Epilogue

“Dr. Schmidt! Oh my God!” Julie Harrison caught me in a tackle-pounce-hug of epic proportions. Her flouncy, hot-pink dress made her look petal-pale beneath the ghastly fluorescent lighting of what passed for a bridal room in Las Vegas. The pearly tips of her elongated eyeteeth were visible against her matching electric rose lipstick.

“You’re so cold,” I laughed.

She held me at arm’s length, and I obliged her with a little twirl, the silky skirt of my white gown whispering around my ankles.

“Oh, Dr. Schmidt. You look so beautiful.” Pink tears traced down her cheeks.

“Eeesh, Julie.” I handed her my handkerchief. “You should probably do something about that.”

“No one told me vampires cry blood,” she giggle-cried. “Gross, right?”

“Pfft.” I waved a hand at her. “I’m pregnant, remember? I could tell you gross.”

“I still can’t believe it. You, marrying Liam. After all the doubts you had about him. Has he…umm…retired?”

“Nope.” I applied a second coat of the warm peachy lipstick a nice lady at the cosmetics counter assured me did not make me look fat—ter.

“And what about you?” she prodded. “Are you still seeing umm…non-human clients?”

“Yep.” I swept cleavage-enhancing bronzer across my chest in angled strokes. Anything to distract from my shotgun-wedding belly.

“But aren’t you afraid of his work interfering? I mean, with the baby coming and all?”

“It’s his baby too,” I reminded her. “And we’ve already established healthy boundaries. He’s home for dinner every night, no body parts in the recycling, and no blood money used for family vacations.”

Julie’s eyes were as large as porcelain plates in her unnaturally pale face.

“Jesus, Julie,” I said. “It was a joke.”

“Thank God.” She fanned herself with a bridal magazine.

“Like I would make dinner every night.” I gave my hair a fluff and tested the security of the veil’s comb before turning to Julie. “Well?”

“Oh, Dr. Schmidt.” Julie’s glowing amber eyes misted over with a pink sheen. “You look perfect. Are you ready?”

I took a long look at myself in the full-length mirror. My skin had finally managed something like the glow admired in the heavily knocked up. My chestnut hair fell around my face in gentle waves Vicky had curled before anchoring the chiffon veil at the crown of my head.

The empire waisted gown Lisa and I had picked out fit snugly under my bosom, but grazed gracefully over my growing baby bump. I could say that now. Beneath that thin fabric, a life was beginning. A life part mine, part Liam’s.

“Julie,” I said. “I am so ready.”

She threw her arms around my neck with an enthusiasm that had me doubting her motives for one breath-stopping moment. “I’m so happy for you, Dr. Schmidt.”

“For the last time, Julie. It’s Matilda.”

I felt her giggle in my ribs. Even undead, her body was a bundle of energy. “I better get back to my seat. Byron hates being alone in a crowd.”

“See you inside.”
